VFW Flag Placing at Lakeview Cemetery (2022)

We will be placing flags on grave stones. Scout leaders can not attend, so if you're going to this event, you must bring a parent. They do need help, so this is a great opportunity to volunteer.

About the event

Dear Troop 31,

Just wanted to reach out and confirm details for the upcoming Wreath Laying at Lakeview.  We will be placing approximately 1200 wreaths at the gravesites of all known Veterans buried in Lakeview Cemetery as well as many of the historic cemeteries throughout town, which include conflicts dating from the French and Indian War (1754-1763).  Your service will honor and remember their sacrifice.  Our Post 653 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars greatly appreciates your help.

Here are the details:

Wreath Laying:

  • Saturday, November 26, beginning at 8am, arrive by 7:50
  • Lakeview Cemetery, Main Street entrance, at the lower Veterans’ section (Section M) just to the right after you enter from Main Street and cross the bridge
  • We’ll begin with remarks from the Commander of the VFW Post 653, Mike McGlinn, then hear instructions on how to properly and respectfully place the wreaths, as well as receive the section maps and lists of Veterans
  • Each group should be at least 4 people, and 6 or 8 per group works even better
  • Refreshments will be available

These events are rain or shine, so be prepared for the weather.  This is always a wonderful showing of support for the VFW, many volunteers look forward to joining in each year.  The VFW is so appreciative of this service to honor and remember each and every Veteran whose final resting place is New Canaan.

Parking:

Please do not park on any part of the grass.  Please use the main parking lot just to the left after you cross the bridge, and once that is full, please ensure that no tire is on any of the grass.  We do not want to be the cause of any damage to the grass areas of the sections and of course adhering to this rule will show our respect for all those interred.

On behalf of the VFW, thank you!  We couldn’t do this meaningful service without volunteers like you. If you have any questions please contact Frances Wilson at teaforsix@mac.com or 203 945 9673 (cell).
